ASCENT for Life, Inc.’s program, the ASCENT Mental Wellness Program, aims to serve, specifically, the local community that is on the path of mental health maintenance and recovery. The program’s providers work in collaboration with the client and in coordination with the client’s mental health professionals. We tailor the services to the client’s most salient health needs.
The program offers services in complementary mind-body/movement therapy such as: Yoga, Meditation, Strength and Cardiovascular training. In addition, the ASCENT Mental Wellness program strives to support the individual’s health goals by providing education and skill development in Nutrition and Emotional Management techniques (i.e. relaxation, self-care, self-efficacy and emotional first aid techniques).
The activities promoted by the ASCENT Mental Wellness Program act as a complement to traditional psychotherapy by working with movement, breath and the body. The providers included in the team have an educational background in Psychology (e.g. psychopathology and trauma) and Counseling, as well as experience working with communities with disabilities. These specific services provided are not intended to be an alternative or substitute to traditional psychotherapy, but an addition to them.
The client (and their guardians, if a minor) has the power to decide the services and its terms - i.e. beginning date, type of services and termination. The provider always keeps the client (and the provider team) informed of the services and the reasoning behind them. The provider establishes a working alliance based on collaboration with client and main support teams of the client.
In order to create a safe-space for the client and respect the client’s own healing process, we provide a constant assessment of the client’s needs and tailor the styles of communication, the instruction techniques and even physical space to those needs.
Ecological And Systemic View of Services
We provide interventions that focus on the individual (the client) as an active part of a social and physical environment; hence the services provided by Ascent Mental Wellness Program take into account the client’s present living circumstances and consider the client’s personal and environmental supports/barriers when providing services. We define treatment goals that are consistent with the life experiences and cultural values of clients.
